How It Works
Homebrewing costs vary widely but typically range from $0.50-2.00 per 12 oz bottle for ingredients, compared to $1.50-4.00 for comparable commercial craft beer. The biggest cost drivers are specialty malts, premium hops (especially for hop-heavy IPAs), and liquid yeast. Ways to reduce costs: buy grain in bulk (50 lb sacks save 30-40%), grow your own hops, harvest and reuse yeast across batches, and buy hops by the pound instead of 1 oz packages. The biggest hidden cost is equipment depreciation, but once you have your setup, incremental brewing costs are quite low. After about 10-15 batches, most homebrewers have recouped their equipment investment in beer savings.
